At it's core, isn't Judaism about God? As example, in regards to moralism, weren't the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God?
You write, "And a day to remember that even when the darkness descends and threatens to suffocate us all, there is reason for hope because we are not alone."
I think that’s the core, yes. Or the Story is. The two are related, of course. And The Story doesn’t begin without The Call. The Call —> The Story —> The Law. Something like that.
Mr. Annoying wonders, why not take a bit of a break from the The Call, The Story, The Law, The History, The Suffering, The Christians, The Muslims, The Jews....
If the core of Judaism is God, if that is true, then.....
That, Mr (Never) Annoying, is an excellent question.
The traditional answer is: Obey the commandments. Do the mitzvot. Live as a Jew. And be sure to tell the Story to your children. No matter what. Does that approach include yammering on Substack? Maybe, but I sort of doubt it. Problem is, it feels like another storm is brewing. As if the periodic spasms of human craziness are about to consume us again, so I obsess about it. The main thing Substack gives me is a reminder that other people see the same storm that I do. That I’m not crazy. Substack as a sanity check. Because most of the people I know day-to-day IRL don’t talk about it. Or if they do, it’s only for a minute or two. Yes, that has its benefits. But when a hurricane is on the horizon, what do you Floridians do? You either batten down the hatches and hunker down, or you evacuate, all while comparing notes with your neighbors. It’s possible this current storm will never make landfall. But it doesn’t look that way to me.
Hmm.... So God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, so that tells us what to do and not do. Moses is a very famous fellow, and we can discuss and debate the very many moral issues that arise from the Ten Commandments instructions for centuries, and their impact upon Jewish history, and human history etc. Ok, good. But....
What about God?
To the limited degree I understand Judaism and Jewish history, when we dig down through all the many details we arrive at God, right?
More very soon on "the storm that is brewing". Something is definitely brewing, agreed.
Enjoyed this a lot.
Thanks.
